Nombreux sont ceux qui confondent systématiquement le tanuki avec le blaireau ou le raton laveur. Chacun rapportant les erreurs se retrouvant sur foultitude de sites. En cherchant un peu, il est pourtant facile de savoir ce qu'est exactement un tanuki.

D'un point de vue plus mythique, le tanuki est un animal très présent dans les légendes japonaises. On trouve en effet de nombreux contes les mettant en scène (souvent avec les kitsune). Le tanuki peut se métamorphoser en bon nombre d'objets dont la fameuse bouilloire magique. Il peut jouer du tambour en se tapant le ventre et est friand de saké et de riz. Avant le 13ème siècle, le tanuki était appelé Mujina, un peu comme les renards de France étaient appelés goupils avant le Roman de Renard.

D'un coté, nous avons donc des mustelidés et Procyonidés et de l'autre un animal de la famille du chien auquel le nom en français fait clairement allusion.

En bonus, voilà la définition donnée par l'Encyclopédie Britannica de 1995 :
a) Raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), member of the dog family (Canidae). Some authorities place it in the raccoon family, Procyonidae.
b) It is the most primitive member of the canid family. Native to eastern Asia and introduced into Europe. It is the only one that hibernates, moves into winter and summer ranges, and looks like a cross between a raccoon--because of its colour and markings--and a fuzzy fox. But it does not have a ringed tail. It has short, brown or blackish limbs, a heavy body, and rounded ears. Head and body length is 50 to 60 cm(20-26 inches); tail length, 13-18 cm (5-7 inches); and weight, about 7.5 kg (16.5 pounds). Most active at night, the raccoon dog is omnivorous and feeds on small animals, fish, vegetation, and carrion. Litters contain 5-12 young, born after a gestation period reported at 60-79 days. The long fur of the raccoon dog is sold commercially as "Ussuri raccoon" or "tanuki."
c) Despite the country's large human population, the land mammals of Japan are relatively numerous in the remote, heavily forested mountain regions. These animals include bears, wild boars, raccoon dogs (TANUKI), foxes, deer, antelope, hares, and weasels; some species are distinct from those of the neighboring Asian continent. Wild monkeys (the Japanese macaque) inhabit many places; those found at the northern tip of Honshu represent the northern limit of monkey habitation in the world.
