More a romantic ghost drama than a comedy...

My Left Eye Sees Ghost is a bit paradoxical. It looks like a comedy, but it's not really funny. After one hour of film, you begin to wonder. "So what?". Usually, Milkyway comedies are quite funny. Not hilarious. But at least quite funny and well done. With this new Sammi Cheng flick, you smile a bit, but there is a clearly a problem. Something is missing.

Then after a while, you begin to understand that it's not really what it was looking like. The movie moves slowly to a drama, and forces the viewers to rethink the entire movie. It's quite risky of course, everybody won't appreciate this effort. But it gives a little originality to a movie who seemed too common at first sight.

My Left Eye Sees Ghosts is not a masterpiece however, the little trick of the script is not enough to make this first hour totally convincing. Hopefully, Sammi shows us some new skills, and doesn't play her usual character. Lau Ching-Wan has been better of course, but has a lot of fun with his character. Then Johnnie To's directing is as usually pleasant, especially in the drama part. So overall, fans of drama and tear jerkers should give a chance to this strange mix of comedy and drama, as well as fans of Sammi Cheng of course. Milkyway has surely done better before, but that's another very decent commercial movie for the summer.
