Every HK movie fan knows that a success is almost always copied and followed by sequels, prequels, usually without any relation. After the very successfull first movie, the Workshop comes back with a new movie following the first one, with the same characters and some slight changes, in order to give a fresh approach without losing the quality of the first movie. The result is not as convincing, but it's still a very entertaining spectacle.
The main difference with the first movie is a little change of tone. The romantic approach of the first episod is not as present this time, and there are more action scenes. In a few words, the movie is not as cute. Except that, the qualities are the same, nice directing from Ching Siu-Tung, refreshing action scenes with some new warriors (Waise Lee) and magic weapons, excellent music, big cast (Leslie Cheung, Jacky Cheung, Wu Ma, Joey Wong, Waise Lee, Michelle Reis...).
Even if this Chinese Ghost Story doesn't reach the alchemy of the first one, it's still a very Hong Kongese heroic fantasy movie, quite refreshing for a westerner, and displaying the qualities of a Workshop production. Heartly recommended.
